The Ghost Rider, by Belgian artist Albert Szukalsk The Ghost Rider, by Belgian artist Albert Szukalski. This eerie statue can be found in the Ghost Town of Rhyolite, Nevada. At its peak, the gold rush-era town had a population of over 10,000 people. However, the boom was short lived. Founded in 1904, the last mine closed just 7 years later in 1911. By 1920 only 14 people lived in the Rhyolite. The abandoned ruins are a must-see visit if you venture into Death Valley.

Over 40 Communist-era statues have been placed there. Neither glorified nor vilified within this setting, they serve as a reminder of the aesthetic and political statements of the time.

While the North of Italy enjoyed a level of natural defense via its long mountainous border, Mussolini thought that this was not enough. And so began a massive industrial project that saw the fortification of over 1,100 miles of terrain.

The town was deserted in 1922 due to the expulsion of the Greek Orthodox population during the Greco-Turkish War. The town is now an open air museum and one can walk among the ruins that include over 350 dilapidated houses, 2 churches, and schools. Despite its beautiful location nestled within the Kaya Valley, visiting Kayaköy is an eerie experience.

Built in the 15th century by Sir Colin Campbell, the abandoned castle stands on what used to be a small rocky island in the Loch. Several paranormal incidents have been reported, including the the pitiful sound of a child crying out for help and a disembodied woman’s voice saying “free me!”. A number of visitors leave with a feeling of being unwelcome, as if the spirits don’t want company.
Kolmanskop, Namibia. This former diamond mining to Kolmanskop, Namibia. This former diamond mining town has been abandoned and filling with sand for over 60 years. Located in the Namib desert the town was once home to over 1,000 people. Kolmanskop had a hospital, a bowling alley, and even had a ballroom, however by 1954 everyone had left. Today the striking Edwardian architecture is being swallowed by the surrounding desert, and you need a permit to be there.
Irbene, Ance parish, Latvia. In 1971, the Soviet U Irbene, Ance parish, Latvia. In 1971, the Soviet Union established a secret radar center at this location along with a settlement for military officers and their families. After the withdrawal of the Soviet Army in 1993 the town became abandoned and remains that way today.
Teufelsberg, Berlin. This man-made hill is made of Teufelsberg, Berlin. This man-made hill is made of rubble from WW2 and also covers an unfinished Nazi military-technical college. The abandoned U.S. listening station, Field Station Berlin still stands at the top of the hill. This is fenced off but is open to the public for 5 to 10 euros a visit.
